An early morning wake up for a surf, a few hours on the FlowRider®, and then finish the day off on the FlowBarrel®. This is a typical day on west coast at Wave House San Diego™, and it’s no surprise that many Carbon FLOW Tour competitors make a point of coming to the California leg of the tour where they will compete in back to back events at Wave House San Diego and The Cove, Riverside.
Stop #3 kicked off on Friday June 22nd at the only Wave House venue in San Diego. This stop is very popular amongst the riders, as during their competition down time they get to test their skills on the infamous Bruticas Maximus™, otherwise known as the FlowBarrel. Once all the fun is over they need to get back into their competitive mode and focus on finishing on the podium at these consecutive events. Grouping these events together is a fairly new format and gives the travelling riders an opportunity to get some early results for the tour season. Following the event at Wave House, the riders had to re-focus and get ready for stop #4 which was held at The Cove, Riverside on June 23rd. This will be The Cove’s first event on the Carbon FLOW Tour as the venue is in its first year of operation. Boasting a new FlowRider Double, the riders were eager to compete and, not surprising, the event proved to be very successful with over 70 competitors.
The competition was fierce across the board as most divisions started off in the quarter and semi final rounds. The female flowboard was extremely competitive as veteran riders Dee Daniels and Jess Nichols had to pull out all the tricks against new comers Madi Moore and Austyn Bynon. Dee Daniels took home the gold at Wave House but unfortunately couldn’t keep up with the good form of Jess Nichols, who snatched first place in Riverside.
As expected, the pro divisions did not disappoint. The Pro Bodyboard was as exciting as ever, with some new junior riders nipping at Nick Nguyen’s heels, but they couldn’t break the veterans form. Nicks smooth style and ability to go from switch to regular stance is unchallenged. Sean Silveira was coming in hungry as his winning streak came to an end after pro division newcomer Chuck Wright took gold in San Diego. Unfortunately for Chuck he couldn’t continue his California luck and finished in fourth place at The Cove, as Sean Silveira rode the wave to victory.
Once again the junior divisions were jam packed with talent. The future of the sport is looking good as these under 17 riders are doing tricks which could hold up in the pro divisions. In the end it was a two-way battle between Nick Sanchez and Canadian ripper Jaxson Moore. It was tight all the way but in the end it was Nick Sanchez who gave himself a well-earned gold medal for his birthday followed by a great performance by young gun Jaxson Moore.
With the new format and some money up for grabs, the Open men’s divisions were stacked. Competing for the first time in the Open division, Carter Wood showed no mercy putting together some clean advanced runs, which gave him the back-to-back victories at both California stops.
The California leg of the tour was by far the most competitive and had a record amount of travelling riders. The competitors get a good 3 week break before packing up and heading back to the east coast for another group leg.
Special thanks to our proud sponsors: Carbon, VGT, Reeflex, Superduper Surf, Overload, Deuce Brand, FLOW, Long Johns and Waterville.
