The USA Carbon FLOW Tour – PA and NJ leg July 12th – July 15th 2012
After a 3week break from competition, the USA Carbon FLOW Tour headed to the east coast for another multi-stop leg. With two Prime events going back to back as well as a Pro/Am event to get the riders warmed up, this part of the tour was anticipated to be very popular.
Starting off at Split Rock resort for a Pro/Am event with no pressure for points, the competitors used this as an opportunity to get warmed up for the Prime events coming up over the weekend. Split Rock committed a $1000 prize purse for the Pro divisions which gave the riders some great incentive to earn extra cash and gain some positive momentum over this multi-stop leg. Three back to back to back events were going to be very testing on the competitors as they headed 20 min down the road for the first Prime event held at Camel Beach resort, which hosted the 2011 FLOW Tour National event. With a well needed 1day break, the riders would then road trip across to the state of New Jersey where Flow House Thundering Surf would finalize the weekend of fierce competition.
This halfway point in the tour proved to be quite significant as the overall tour ratings were starting to take shape. With most competitors competing for their 5th or 6th results, it was no surprise that there were some record breaking numbers in most divisions. The two divisions that stood out the most were the Open Female and Junior divisions. There were an astonishing 20 competitors in the Junior bodyboard division at both Prime stops and between 10 and 15 competitors in the Open female flowboard division, which is a great indication on how much the sport is growing, as well as creating some positive reinforcement for the future of the sport.
There were a few standouts over the weekend. Starting off with young gun, Jaxson Moore, who traveled all the way from Canada, and showed some great consistency as he took the gold medal in both Junior and Open Men’s Flowboard divisions at Flow House and gold in the Junior flowboard division at Camel Beach. Jaxson had been working really hard in the off season on some technical tricks and completed some really clean runs which included advanced tricks including kick flips, 540 big spins and a variety of other combinations. Another stand out was female rider Xana Nash who competed in both the Open Female Flowboard and Junior Flowboard divisions. Xana showed some really clean effortless riding as she placed first in the Open Female Flowboard division at both Prime events as well as 3rd in the Junior Flowboard division at Flow House, NJ. Xana, being the only female competing against the under 17 boys, really held her own and proved to be the dark horse who rose to the occasion with a podium finish. Last but not least was Pro Flowboarder Brad Spencer. Brad coming from a wakeboarding background really took to the sport with ease. Brad had some really technical runs at both events, which included backside flips, clean kickflips, massive 360 shuvits and more. Brad managed to take the gold in the Pro flowboard division at both Prime events as well as gold in Open men’s bodyboard at Camel Beach.
With some very long days in the sun and some high level competition, the midway point of the season was very successful. We of course could not have done it with out the support of Split Rock Resort, Flow House Thundering Surf and Camel Beach. All venues were very hospitable and we would like to thank their staff for welcoming us into their homes. We would also like to thank the event staff as they help keep the events running smooth and seamlessly. A special thanks to Cathy Seabert and Mike O Conner for spending countless hours adding up all the scores and results. You are truly appreciated.
The riders and event coordinators have a 10-day break before heading to the most popular leg on the tour in the state of Utah. Utah will be hosting several competitions, competitors, and there will be some well anticipated battles, so be sure to check in and follow all the action as the FLOW Tour heads into its second half of the season.
