Wave Loch’s Mobile FlowRider On Tour
In this corner, standing 16 feet high and 40 feet long and weighing in at 140,000 pounds the FlowRider Mobile, nicknamed the “MoFlow”, is thrills on wheels, delivering 15,000 gallons of water flowing at 20 MPH to anywhere in the world that is reachable by roads.
Canada has an excellent highway system and for the summer of 2009, the MoFlow got its act together and Wave Loch together with Rick Davis Promotions Inc. took it on the road from Edmonton to Toronto as one of the featured attractions of the Capital Ex and Canadian National Expo. The first stop at Capital Ex was an extravaganza of music, rides, food and fun. For nine days in July, the MoFlow was part of the SURF Party, sponsored by Pizza 73 and LOST, which brought ocean thrills to Edmonton, Alberta.
Alberta is big on summer fairs and festivals. This year the Capital Ex featured the Cirque Shanghai Bai Xi music and comedy from the likes of Howie Mandel, David Clayton Thomas and K-Os, and traditional thrill rides like Pharaoh’s Fury, Ring of Fire, Starship 300 and Swing Tower.
The MoFlow was something completely different, however – several tons of realistic ocean thrills transported and imported to a Canadian oil town that is 700 miles from the Pacific and 1500 miles from the Atlantic. It attracted more than a little attention. Sean Silveira from Orlando, FL is the 2008 FLOW Tour National Champion (and most likely champion for 2009 with 3 events left) and he traveled all the way to Edmonton to show the local rogues what was possible on the FlowRider®. As Sean went through his repertoire both prone and standing, some of Canada’s best wakeboarders, snowboarders and skateboarders took notes and then tried their skills on the surfing machine.
The experience was summed up best by event MC Dan McBride: “It’s basically just the raddest time alive.”
After Edmonton, the Mobile FlowRider packed up and is headed for Toronto, where it will be featured at the Canadian National Exhibition, a 130-year-old national fair which is the fourth largest in North America, this event runs from August 21 to September 7.
